Founded in 1998 by Ashraf Abuissa, Bissan Gallery was among Doha's pioneering fine-art galleries — introducing international and regional art to Qatari audiences long before the country's institutional art infrastructure took shape.
Developed under AbuIssa Holding, the gallery was more than an exhibition space: it became a trusted art consultancy and a cultural touchstone in the region, hosting exhibitions that brought regional and international artists together in dialogue.
It also opened its doors to the public: free weekend classes led by artists and educators from VCUarts Qatar and local institutes invited schoolchildren to paint, meet artists, and discover the language of art firsthand.
Over time, Bissan grew into a multi-tiered art consultancy — sourcing works globally, advising on collections, and managing framing and installation for private, corporate, and institutional clients. It paused in 2004, yet remained close to the hearts of the collectors, artists, and institutions it had brought together.
Chairman of AbuIssa Holding and a pioneering figure across Qatar's art and business worlds, Ashraf Abuissa is a passionate collector and cultural advocate. His commitment to art began with a personal journey of discovery in Paris and grew into a lifelong passion.
Known for his love of Arab contemporary and Orientalist art, he champions art for its emotional and cultural worth rather than as mere investment. He later co-founded AlBahie Auction House with Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Hamad Al Thani — and with Bissan's return, he comes back to his first love: a space for dialogue, curation, and inspiration.
The name Bissan refers to a historic Palestinian city — an enduring symbol of memory, resilience, and rootedness. These values continue to shape the spirit of the gallery.
